Here is one of my last stories, from Baghdad. The market of Baghdad al Jadida was stormed some months ago by a huge blast that left hundreds of people dead. When I came to this neighbourhood, I found that everyone wanted to forget what happened. The market is not yet fully operationnal, but all the security measures are already forgotten too!
What I liked filming this, was to do something very different from what is usually in the news: death and blood. This market is colourfull, and it’s good sometime to see Iraqis in their “normal” life -even if it is an illusion to believe that one can live anything like normal in such an environnement.
This report (here in French) was broadcast during the evening newsshow of the German-French channel Arte, on Nov. 2, 2007.
